Recommended route
White Orchard → Vizima → Velen → Novigrad / Oxenfurt → Skellige → Kaer Morhen → regional ally cleanup → Isle of Mists and base-game finale → Hearts of Stone → Blood and Wine / Toussaint.
This is not a claim that every unmarked encounter or mutually exclusive quest can be completed in one save. Skip completed steps and continue with the next available unfinished step.
- Editorial order
- The numbered sequence and optional placements are our recommendation.
- Prerequisites & cutoffs
- Marked STOP / HOLD. These are factual constraints from the cited sources.
- Conditional
- “If triggered”, “if unlocked” and branch steps depend on choices — not all are required.
How to use the order
Read notice boards when entering a settlement. Between numbered story steps, do nearby side quests and contracts whose journal level fits your character. Save before major decisions and departure warnings. If an optional step has not unlocked, continue its prerequisites rather than treating the table as a rigid script. Automatic Ciri segments are part of the story and should be played when triggered. In Ciri’s Footsteps, Family Matters, and preparation quests are umbrellas whose objectives can span several entries.
Gwent collectors: Buy available cards, play named opponents before they leave, and do the party games during A Matter of Life and Death. High Stakes requires a strong deck and a separate save; it is not an early-city errand.
Before a hard fight, the Preparation Checklist helps. Starting fresh? See the White Orchard walkthrough.

1. White Orchard
Opening region
0 / 11 done
Do not postpone the village’s early side quests until after departure. Start the griffin investigation early if needed to unlock Tomira’s dialogue; the numbered order is a route, not a requirement to avoid every main objective.
2. Velen
Early story; return later for harder contracts
0 / 20 done
Recommended placement of optional errands is editorial. You do not have to clear high-level Velen contracts before entering Novigrad.

3. Novigrad and Oxenfurt
City story and companion quests
0 / 17 done
Get Junior and Count Reuven’s Treasure overlap. The listed order is one practical route, not the sole valid sequence. Oxenfurt and Novigrad share the northern mainland travel area, so group objectives rather than making separate full sweeps.
Sources: Novigrad story structure; Statuette availability; Triss party timing; Political prerequisites
4. Skellige
Island story, then succession and companion cleanup
0 / 17 done
Do not let an automatic journal entry for Ugly Baby pressure you into collecting Uma immediately. Main-story prompts generally allow time to do the earlier companion work.
Sources: Flesh for Sale gate; Skellige succession; King’s Gambit / cave ordering; The Last Wish cutoff; Ugly Baby companion cutoff
5. Kaer Morhen and the Isle of Mists checkpoint
Midgame story and ally preparation
0 / 9 done
Berengar sources differ over whether to name the cutoff Isle of Mists or the later battle. Finish it before the Isle to avoid the disagreement. The main-game completion route does not require clearing every treasure chest or sea cache.
Sources: Act II and III quest list; Kaer Morhen side quests; Berengar cutoff table; Isle checklist
6. Final mainland and Skellige story
Finish politics and optional cleanup before the finale
0 / 7 done
This is a spoiler-light route: quest titles reveal progression, but outcome choices are not prescribed. Finishing quests does not guarantee every ally, romance, or political ending.
Sources: Act III quest sequence; Reason of State requirements and deadline
7. Hearts of Stone — northeastern mainland / Oxenfurt
Recommended after the base story; traditionally starts around level 32
0 / 10 done
Dead Man’s Party and Open Sesame! can be tackled in another order. Base story → Hearts of Stone → Blood and Wine is the recommended narrative order here, not a mandatory game rule.
Sources: Hearts of Stone quest catalog; Side and treasure quest guide; Wedding side quest; Final optional lead
8. Toussaint — Blood and Wine
Recommended last; traditionally starts around level 34
0 / 16 done
The exact late sequence depends on choices. The Warble of a Smitten Knight is a documented failure at Capture the Castle; many other side activities are only temporarily inaccessible during the story stretch.
Sources: Blood and Wine guide; Expansion quest catalog; Tournament cutoff; Wine Wars progression
Contract cleanup: suggested ascending difficulty
These are established journal levels, not independently measured Remastered difficulty. A difficult fight can still exceed its level suggestion. The arrows give a suggested sequence; contracts do not generally require the previous contract to be complete.

Treasure hunts and the remaining activities
Do ordinary treasure hunts as you discover their notes and keys and can handle the enemies. There is no single required order for every hidden chest. Prioritize diagrams that improve the build you use: Viper in White Orchard, Griffin in Velen, Feline around Novigrad, Ursine in Skellige, Wolven once Kaer Morhen opens, then upgrades as requirements allow. Toussaint provides grandmaster hunts; Manticore is another expansion option.
Regional fistfights, horse races, bandit camps, monster nests, and most sea caches fit between story steps. They are not reasons to delay every major story quest until the whole map is empty. Take unmarked nearby requests seriously: some encounters depend on staying nearby or making a particular choice.
At Kaer Morhen, return when ready for Greenhouse Effect, Monster Slayer, and The Witchers’ Forge. The Bastion and Wolven hunt fit naturally into your first exploration, but high-level fights can wait.

This preserves opportunities; it does not choose outcomes for you or guarantee a 100% completion trophy. Some quests depend on the imported Witcher 2 state, choices, or encounters. Sources occasionally label a cutoff by its umbrella quest rather than its exact trigger, so the route deliberately completes those quests earlier.
